Royal Gorge Adventure Journal
How could Royal Gorge give visitors a reason to stay longer?

THE CHALLENGE
Royal Gorge is one of Colorado’s most recognizable attractions, but the visitor experience is often compressed into a single day: arrive, walk the bridge, take the photo, leave.
The opportunity is much larger.
Within reach are cabins, the Royal Gorge Route Railroad, whitewater rafting, ziplining, trails, wildlife viewing, historic town, waterfalls, and some of Southern Colorado’s most distinctive landscapes.
The problem is not a lack of things to do. It is that they are rarely presented as one connected experience.
THE INSIGHT
People don't plan a three-day trip around a single landmark.
They plan around what those three days could feel like.
Royal Gorge already has the ingredients for a long weekend. What's missing is a simple way to connect those experiences and help visitors picture the trip before they arrive.
Instead of another attraction brochure, I designed something visitors could plan with, carry with them, and keep afterward.

THE CONCEPT
Anchor the trip. Extend the stay. Connect the experience.
A 16-page field journal turns Royal Gorge from a single stop into the anchor for a longer stay.
Then introduce the mechanics:
PLAN
Itineraries and trip-planning pages help visitors imagine more than one day.
EXPLORE
Checklists, wildlife spotting, photography prompts, and local recommendations guide the experience.
REMEMBER
Stamps, journal pages, stickers, photographs, and a keepsake pocket give visitors a reason to keep it.

FROM IDEA TO EXPERIENCE
[Cover] [Welcome] [Why Stay] [Weekend Escape]
The journal moves from inspiration to planning, then from exploration to memory-making.
WHY IT WORKS
Extends the Stay
Turns "What do we do at Royal Gorge?" into "What could we do for three days?"
Connects Revenue Opportunities
Rail, lodging, dining, attractions, and regional experiences become part of one visitor journey rather than separate offers.
Creates Cross-Promotion
The journal gives Royal Gorge properties and partner experiences a natural way to appear within the same trip.
Creates Measurable Digital Touchpoints
QR codes can connect printed pages to galleries, booking pages, seasonal offers, email capture, and campaign landing pages, creating measurable interactions beyond the printed journal.
Builds Retention
Handwriting, photographs, stamps, tickets, and stickers turn a marketing piece into a souvenir visitors are less likely to discard.
Creates a Repeatable System
Seasonal editions, family versions, photography editions, and downloadable pages can extend the concept without redesigning the entire product.
Extended Case Study
Storyboard Walkthrough
The visual system deliberately stays closer to a field journal than a polished tourism brochure. Pencil illustrations, handwritten details, open writing space, checklists, stamps, and restrained graphics allow the visitor’s own marks to become part of the design.
Storyboard Wireframe
The journal does not end when the visitor leaves. Ideally, that is when it becomes the most valuable keepsake.
Beyond Print
One promotional piece. A larger destination-content system.
Downloadable Editions
Adventure, Photography, and Family editions let visitors choose a journal based on how they travel.
Expandable Content
Memory pages, wildlife logs, stamp sheets, kids' activities, and seasonal pages can exist as individual downloads rather than requiring a new print run.
Measurable Digital Touchpoints
Unique QR codes can connect journal pages to booking offers, photography galleries, itinerary content, email capture, or seasonal campaigns. Scan behavior and landing-page engagement can then be measured.
The journal can grow from one promotional piece into a small destination-content system.

REFLECTION
This project began with one question:
How do you turn one landmark into a longer stay?
The answer wasn't another isolated promotion. It was a better way to picture the entire experience.
The journal connects planning, exploration, photography, wildlife, local discovery, and memory-making into one visitor journey. Royal Gorge remains the anchor, but the experience becomes larger than any single attraction.
Good destination marketing doesn't simply explain a place. It helps someone imagine themselves already there.
